Moses Anthony Davis, professionally known as Beenie Man, is a Jamaican dancehall DJ born on August 22, 1973, in Kingston. He began performing at the age of five and gained early recognition by winning the Tastee Talent contest in 1981. His debut single, Too Fancy, and early collaborations with producers like Henry "Junjo" Lawes and Bunny Lee established him as a prodigious talent. After a brief pause to finish school, Beenie Man returned to the scene in the early 1990s, performing alongside figures like Ninjaman and Shabba Ranks, and won his first DJ of the Year Award in 1993, the first of eight consecutive wins. He was crowned King of the Dancehall at Reggae Sumfest in 2009. Beenie Man achieved international fame in the mid-1990s with albums such as Blessed (1994) and Maestro (1996), and hit singles like Who Am I, which became a global success. Collaborating with artists including Barrington Levy, Dennis Brown, Lady Saw, and Mýa, he helped bring dancehall to a worldwide audience. His 2000 album Art & Life earned him a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. Beenie Man continued to release music in the 2000s and 2010s, with notable hits such as Dude (2004) and collaborations with Janet Jackson (Feel It Boy), and maintained a prominent international profile through tours, awards, and media appearances. His career has also seen controversy, primarily due to anti-gay lyrics in some of his songs, which led to concert cancellations and public criticism, although he has issued apologies and statements of respect for the LGBTQ+ community.
