Bedouin Soundclash is a Canadian band from Toronto, formed in 2001, consisting of vocalist/guitarist Jay Malinowski, bassist Eon Sinclair, and various session musicians. Their music blends reggae and ska, and the band took its name from a 1996 dub record by Badawi. They gained prominence with their second album, Sounding a Mosaic (2004), particularly the single “When the Night Feels My Song”, which became a Canadian radio hit, charted internationally, and was used in commercials and TV programs. Early success led to extensive touring across Canada, the UK, and internationally, and the band won the 2006 Juno Award for New Group of the Year. From 2007 to 2010, Bedouin Soundclash released Street Gospels (2007) and Light the Horizon (2010), achieving further commercial success with singles like “St. Andrews” and “Brutal Hearts.” During this period, they toured with acts such as No Doubt, Paramore, and Damian Marley, and performed at international festivals including Japan’s Summer Sonic Festival and Expo 2010 in Shanghai. In 2010, they officially launched their label, Pirates Blend Records, supporting side projects and solo releases by Malinowski. The band also underwent lineup changes, with Sekou Lumumba and later Chuck Treece joining as drummers. Between 2014 and the present, the band reunited for special performances and continued producing new music. They released Mass in 2019, followed by multiple singles in 2018 and 2022, including “Shine On” featuring Marcia Richards of the Skints. Over two decades, Bedouin Soundclash has maintained a consistent presence in the reggae/ska scene, balancing international touring with independent releases and collaborations while retaining their signature fusion sound.
