Augustus Pablo

Country: Jamaica

Horace Michael Swaby (21 June 1953 – 18 May 1999), best known as Augustus Pablo, was a pioneering Jamaican roots reggae and dub musician, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. Active from the early 1970s until his death, he became internationally renowned for popularizing the melodica as a lead instrument in reggae. Born in St. Andrew, Jamaica, Pablo learned organ at Kingston College School and was introduced to the melodica during his youth. He began recording in the early 1970s for Herman Chin Loy’s Aquarius label, adopting the name Augustus Pablo and releasing influential instrumentals such as “Higgi Higgi” and “East of the River Nile.” Pablo’s career quickly expanded through collaborations with key figures in Jamaican music. After a brief stint with Now Generation, he worked closely with producer Clive Chin, recording the classic instrumental “Java” in 1972. He later formed his own labels—Hot Stuff, Message, and Rockers—and released This Is Augustus Pablo (1974), followed by groundbreaking dub work with King Tubby, including Ital Dub (1975). As a producer and musician, Pablo worked with artists such as Jacob Miller, Bob Marley, Horace Andy, Junior Delgado, and Hugh Mundell, helping shape the sound of roots reggae and dub. Among his most celebrated works is “King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown,” the dub version of Jacob Miller’s “Baby I Love You So,” later ranked among Rolling Stone’s greatest songs of all time. Pablo released a series of landmark albums including King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown (1976), East of the River Nile (1978), and Original Rockers (1979), and toured internationally, recording a live album in Tokyo in 1987. A committed Rastafarian, he continued making music into the 1990s, including a collaboration with Primal Scream in 1997. Augustus Pablo died on 18 May 1999 from a collapsed lung after long-term illness, leaving behind a lasting legacy carried…
