Admiral Bailey

Country: Jamaica

Admiral Bailey, born Glendon Bailey on 24 January 1962 in Kingston, Jamaica, is a prominent dancehall deejay best known for his dominance during the mid-1980s to early 1990s. Emerging from the vibrant Waterhouse scene, he got his start on U-Roy’s King Sturgav Hi-Fi sound system and was introduced to King Jammy by Josey Wales. With a sharp lyrical style and commanding stage presence, Bailey quickly rose to prominence and was widely regarded as one of the hottest dancehall stars of his era. His breakthrough came with a string of hit singles, beginning with the duet “One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer” alongside Chaka Demus. This success was followed by popular tracks such as “Politician,” “Chatty Chatty Mouth,” and “Ballot Box.” In 1987, he scored a massive—but controversial—hit with “Punaany,” a slack tune that was temporarily banned from radio play before being re-recorded as “Healthy Body.” That same year, Bailey released his debut album Kill Them With It, cementing his place at the forefront of dancehall music. As the 1990s progressed, Admiral Bailey shifted away from slack lyrics and became known as a comparatively “clean” deejay, setting him apart from many contemporaries. He continued recording with major producers such as Donovan Germain, Bobby Digital, and King Jammy, while also branching out into soca collaborations with Byron Lee. His crossover appeal led to mainstream recognition in Jamaica, including appearances in television commercials, and he remains a respected figure in dancehall history, now living in Jamaica.
