Introduction

Few groups have so successfully blended roots reggae tradition with contemporary sensibilities as Morgan Heritage. Known affectionately as the “Royal Family of Reggae,” the band carries the torch of reggae through family unity, powerful harmonies, spiritual messages, and global reach.

Formed by the children of Denroy Morgan, the legendary Jamaican-American reggae artist, Morgan Heritage has left an indelible mark on the genre through a combination of faith, family, and fearless creativity.

Family Roots & Formation

Morgan Heritage was founded in 1994 by five of Denroy Morgan’s children:

  • Peter “Peetah” Morgan – lead vocals

  • Una Morgan – vocals & keyboards

  • Roy “Gramps” Morgan – vocals & keyboards

  • Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan – rhythm guitar

  • Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan – percussion & vocals

Born and raised between Brooklyn, New York, and Springfield, Jamaica, the siblings were surrounded by music from an early age. Inspired by their father’s career and guided by deep Rastafari faith, they were destined to fuse roots reggae with modern influences, drawing from their multicultural upbringing.

They were signed to MCA Records in the early 1990s and debuted with Miracles (1994), showcasing R&B/reggae fusion—but soon after, they returned to Jamaica to embrace a purer reggae sound that would define their legacy.

Breakthrough Albums & Global Recognition

Morgan Heritage has delivered a series of critically acclaimed albums that have redefined roots reggae for modern audiences, including:

  • “Don’t Haffi Dread” (1999) – A modern roots classic, promoting spiritual identity over physical appearance.

  • “More Teachings…” (2001) – Showcasing conscious lyrics and tighter roots arrangements.

  • “Three in One” (2003) and “Full Circle” (2005) – Cementing their presence as international reggae ambassadors.

  • “Strictly Roots” (2015) – Grammy Award winner for Best Reggae Album, blending classic roots with dancehall, soul, and global styles.

  • “Avrakedabra” (2017) – Grammy-nominated follow-up featuring world music influences and international collaborations.

Their music is proof that reggae is heritage in harmony—and that the legacy of the island lives strongest when passed down through generations.
